Last time I posted, it was after 10 straight days without a mission. Well, another 10 days have gone by and I must say...this is getting ridiculous. Must be some sort of non-flying record for a medevac crew over here. So in my continuing quest to find ways to pass the time productively, I find myself getting desperate. I already mastered juggling, Rubik's cubes, read over 15 nonfiction or historical fiction books, learned a whole new repertoire on the guitar, mastered the "Enter the Kettlebell" challenge, lost 15 lbs, learned everything I could about politics, the Supreme Court and the NFL. And here's my latest...
So for some reason this compound enforces a blackout at night- no lights. I think it's absurd because it has been here for YEARS...the locals know exactly where every building is on this compound, how many people come and go and when aircraft land and depart. If they wanted to, they have all the info they need to land precise mortar or rocket attacks, so I don't think any light will 'give away our position'- but that's not my call. Since I live at night, I have spent the last month wandering around in the dark, with only the stars to guide me. If I stare at the stars and use my peripheral vision, I can begin to make out the subtle changes in the shadows that identify the rooftops (when a star disappears, there must be a building between us). So I have spent many hours staring at the stars. One day I decided to start paying attention. Started connecting the dots. Like a good Eagle Scout, I knew the Big Dipper and can always find the north star. Briefly dabbled in this when I found myself in South Africa and had to leard how to navigate in the southern hemisphere by the Southern Cross. Now I have researched and studied and can identify almost a dozen of the major constellations, map out their boundaries, even relate the Greek mythology surrounding them. Orion was always a favorite (similar to my name), with Sirius at his heels, attacking Taurus with his red eye, with the Seven Sisters over his shoulder. They are being overlooked by Cassiopeia, the queen on her throne. Ursa Major and Minor have always been there, and my most recent addition was Scorpio. Even the moon has caught my attention. I can point out the major features and show you where they landed and where the US Flag is posted.
And yet, in my descent into Nerd-ery, I am still quite content and proud of myself. The heavens are an awesome spectacle of precision and organization.

okay...we've voted and though we know you are in a hardship area...you are kind of lucky you know? :) madison is intrigued by the stars...did you know i am a scorpio? i can't imagine how bored you must be that wandering around at night is how you spend your time...but to each his own :) do you have internet access constantly or just at given times? this church indexing(transfer of records into the church's databse) is interesting me and i'm going to attempt to add it into our home school repertoire...might be something you would enjoy if you are able to do it.
missing you and as always praying for you...should we start praying for missions? i think not :) all i can think is if he's not getting calls that means noone is getting hurt...and that is a good thought :)
we love you! love,summer
hi boy, summer, I was thinking the same thing...ryan, we too have been playing on familysearch, the church has finally linked all records into one file for a given name, so you can see all research, eliminate duplicates, and submit to temple work from home...fabulous game...time consuming...I have been trying to figure out if they have copies of Griffiths Primary Valuation record, which takes the place of the irish census from 1848-1864 which was destroyed...so if you need a project, see if you can find a copy of that that isn't in some library somewhere on microfilm? I think that is the next step in the spillane line, we seem to have records back to Jeremiah J Spillane b 15 aug 1838, county cork...married Mary Frances Dooris in Cambridge MA 25 aug 1869...thought he might have been a landowner at the time of the valuation...before he moved to the states! also bartholemew Nihan, b <1827 coppeen cross, parrish of kenna, county cork, ireland married mary griffin b<1829 same place...we missed you at dads party, kristy looked great...kids were participating and running around with cousins, finally warmed up to us...call your wife...she misses hearing your voice...doesn't anyone have a phone out there? you know, like on MASH, where radar could help make unapproved phone calls home...you must have something someone wants!
May the road rise to meet you,
may the wind be always at your back,
may the sun shine warm upon your face
may the rain fall soft upon your fields,
and until we meet again,
may god hold you in the palm of His hand.
